Understanding Effective Dyslexia Intervention Strategies

At A Plus Learning Solutions, we provide evidence-based dyslexia interventions that meet each student’s unique learning needs. Our approach, rooted in the science of reading, focuses on structured literacy. This proven method helps struggling readers, including those with diagnosed or suspected dyslexia.

Structured literacy includes essential components like:

We teach these skills using multisensory, systematic, and cumulative methods. Our instruction is direct, explicit, diagnostic, and carefully sequenced. This helps students build confidence as they master each reading and spelling skill at a pace that fits their needs.

One of the most effective methods we use is Orton-Gillingham. Developed by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham in the 1930s, it remains a foundation of high-quality dyslexia instruction today.

We offer two programs based on this approach:

  • Wilson Language Training

  • Barton Reading & Spelling System

Both programs are backed by research and ideal for students who need intensive, personalized instruction. And here’s the best part—students don’t need a formal dyslexia diagnosis to start. If they struggle with reading, our structured support can help.

Whether you’re looking for dyslexia interventions in Beachwood, one-on-one tutoring in Northeast Ohio, or virtual reading support, A Plus Learning Solutions is here to help every learner succeed.

Dyslexia Intervention

Wilson Reading System® Instruction

We proudly offer Wilson Reading System® instruction, a highly structured, evidence-based program designed to support students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. Grounded in the Orton-Gillingham approach, Wilson targets both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) skills through a sequential, multisensory methodology that meets the unique needs of each learner.

Our certified Wilson instructors use a personalized, student-centered approach that integrates visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile techniques—ideal for neurodivergent learners and students who benefit from a structured literacy model. Lessons focus on core literacy concepts such as letter-sound recognition, syllable segmentation and formation, word structure, and sentence fluency.

The program is composed of 12 carefully sequenced steps, each broken down into sub-skills that must be mastered before progressing. This step-by-step progression ensures that students build confidence and competence at every stage of their learning journey. Every session is customized and aligns with both Wilson guidelines and the individual educational needs of the child.

Tutoring sessions follow a comprehensive, multi-component format that covers ten targeted skill areas, including:

  • Sound-symbol awareness
  • Word and sentence reading
  • Spelling and sentence writing
  • Oral reading fluency and comprehension strategies

Barton Reading & Spelling System

The Barton Reading & Spelling System is a research-backed, Orton-Gillingham influenced intervention designed specifically for students with dyslexia and other reading challenges. This structured literacy program is multi-sensory, direct, explicit, and sequential—providing the kind of targeted support necessary for meaningful and lasting progress.

Approved by the Boards of Education in California, Colorado, and Arkansas, the Barton System aligns with the Common Core State Standards and meets the federal requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act. It is one of the most widely respected dyslexia intervention programs available today, making it an excellent choice for families seeking personalized tutoring services in Northeast Ohio or remote options.

The Barton System includes 10 carefully sequenced levels, beginning with foundational phonemic awareness and progressing through advanced literacy concepts such as:

  • Consonants and short vowels
  • Closed and unit syllables
  • Multi-syllable decoding strategies
  • Vowel teams and vowel-R patterns
  • Prefixes, suffixes, and silent-E rules
  • Irregular sight word strategies
  • Latin roots and Greek combining forms

Each lesson features a structured progression that includes a review of prior concepts, phonemic awareness warm-ups, hands-on tile-based instruction, and increasingly complex reading and spelling practice at the word, phrase, and sentence levels. Beginning at Level 3, students also read decodable stories to build fluency and comprehension, with multisensory support for irregular word recognition.

To accommodate families beyond our local service area or those needing flexible scheduling, we offer virtual tutoring services through Zoom and the Whizzimo platform. This technology ensures that remote instruction remains interactive and multisensory, using shared screen control and digital materials to replicate the in-person experience. Students also gain access to supplemental online resources aligned directly with their Barton level for consistent support and reinforcement.
